All papers and short contributions (often printed as Notes from Observatories) are subject to peer review by the normal refereeing process. Material may be submitted as hard copy to:

Summaries of meetings

The Editors welcome contributed reports of astronomical meetings, and in particular of smaller meetings whose proceedings might not otherwise be published. In particular, we are always pleased to receive contributions from organizers of the monthly Specialist Discussion Meetings of the Royal Astronomical Society, and from session organizers at the annual National Astronomy Meetings. These reports should be similar in style to the meeting reports published from time to time in the `News and Views' column of Nature.

The Reporting Editors of The Observatory also undertake to publish summaries of Monthly A&G (Ordinary) Meetings of the Royal Astronomical Society. We are grateful for any help that speakers can give us by providing summaries of their talks at these meetings.

Reviews of books and software

The Observatory Magazine publishes reviews of astronomical books of all kinds, from children's books through glossy coffee-table books to university textbooks and research monographs. Our reviewers are drawn mainly from the professional astronomical community, and their reviews are widely respected by librarians and educators worldwide as a guide to the quality and usefulness of recently published texts.

Our review section also includes software packages that are now appearing on the market. If you are a developer or distributor of software with an astronomical theme, and would like to see your product reviewed in our pages, the Editors will be pleased to forward a review copy to a suitably qualified reviewer.

Reviewers are encouraged to use the Magazine's LaTeX template for reviews.

Thesis Abstracts

The Editors encourage newly qualified astronomy and astronomy-related PhDs to submit their thesis abstracts to the Magazine. It is hoped that by publishing this material we will both promote their work and provide the Magazine's readership with a broad overview of the research being carried out in the universities.

Here & There: What the papers didn't mean to say

We've all cringed at it: the latest brilliant discovery reported in the national press, turned to meaningless drivel thanks to the unwitting efforts of journalists, printers, or the authors themselves.

Here's just one example:

ENLIGHTENED TIMES INDEED

In 1788 William [Herschel], aged 50, married a widower from Upton . . . --- Astronomy Now, 2000 March, p. 33.

The Editors welcome contributions to the Here & There column. Only published material is considered, and should normally be in the form of a single legible photocopy of the original and a full reference to the publication, to facilitate verification and citation.
